I am reading The Nester’s new book Welcome Home and it’s been a fun reminder for something that has been on my heart this season. I am always so impressed by the gorgeous front steps with zillions of pumpkins but kept feeling like, even before the season started, that I needed to draw my line in the sand and decide not to spend more than $50 on fall this year. That included pumpkins, mums, cozy throws, candles, etc. After I let the kids each pick out an orange pumpkin (the heirloom pumpkins aren’t cool to them ;)) and two mums for our front steps the total was already at $30. Trying to be smart with the seasonal touches I put into our home this year was completely echoing everything I was subsequently reading in Welcome Home (isn’t it nice when someone else verifies what you think is important?). So I started thinking that I’d love to do a completely free table… other than the food we’d eat. So that’s where this came from: foraged branches from the end of street, a faux pumpkin that I’ve had four about four or five years and all our regular dishes / serving ware.
If I’ve followed the blog for a while you know that I purchase all our dishes at the Dollar Tree because then I’m never mad when something breaks and they are just as good quality as the set we got from our wedding at Pottery Barn (you can’t beat $1 / plate / bowl!!). This setting would be perfect for a cozy soup or chili dinner with the fire on behind the table… try it with my White Chicken Chili and you won’t be disappointed!!!
